Until then, I will err on the cautious side based on the best info available (not anecdotal stories on BITOG, including mine). I, too, would like scientific results showing the results of mixing coolants. A remaining inhibitor (borate) could attack aluminum if the silicates are depleted." An example cited by one coolant chemist: A somewhat diluted mix, perhaps 50% to 60% water, with the remainder (from top-ups) a 50-50 combination of an OAT and a conventional American coolant or a G-05. However, there are possible problems with extreme mixtures. "Sure, for small top-ups or in an emergency situation, it doesn't matter-use what you have. Regarding your last statement, in this article, Paul Weissler gives one reason NOT TO MIX COOLANTS: Or, use a universal coolant that is approved for ALL applications. Replace same with same, if possible, using the same type of antifreeze that was in the system. "When adding or changing coolants, therefore, the best advice is to follow the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer. Some argue this is not entirely true, but the stuff seem to work okay and is widely accepted in the aftermarket." "To reduce confusion, several antifreeze suppliers (Peak and Prestone) now sell a "universal" type of antifreeze that is compatible with all types of antifreeze and all makes and models of vehicles. " GM warns that intermixing extended life coolant with ordinary coolant reduces the coolant's life to that of the ordinary coolant." In this Larry Carley article, he reinforces these concepts: That article is aimed at service garages wanting to consolidate their inventory, not maximize cooling system life. He says it is ok to top off different coolants with UNIVERSAL coolant. I still have yet to hear a *reason* coolants can't mix.Īudi, that Larry Carley article does NOT recommend mixing different coolant chemistry. And Ethylene Glycol is a form of alcohol. The "mixing" of coolants is the most overblown issue on this website and on others too.Įverything you need to know about coolants is here on this page:
ZEREX G05 50 50 FULL
The SDS sheets for both the Durex ($8.99 full strength) and the Prestone ($11.99 full strength) list Ethylene Glycol as the primary ingredient. I am sure that there are more expensive places to buy this antifreeze, but Wal-Marts and farm supplies are fairly ubiquitous. If my math is correct, that would be about $3.45 a gallon for the water. If you like Prestone better for some reason, Wal-Mart lists both the full strength and the pre-diluted in stock for $10.87 and $8.88 respectively. This is the way to go for those that find it hard to mix it yourself 50/50.ĭon’t buy the $6-$8 a gallon antifreeze it is alcohol based and not long lasting. Now you have 2 gallon of clean new 50/50. Write the contents on each jug with a permanent marker. Pour the water from the clean temporary jug into the new antifreeze jug. Pour half the antifreeze in the new water jug. Pour half the water in a temporary clean container. Go buy a gallon of good quality full strength antifreeze ($14) and one gallon of your favorite distilled water.

So, can you expand on the benefits you are referring to? And that is probably not related to the type of A/F in it. Some of the tractors have been with us for 30 years with no cooling system related problems.įrankly, the number one cooling system problem that I see on older vehicles is the plastic tank on the inlet side of the radiator failing. We have a dozen or so pieces that take antifreeze, so maintaining that number of pieces with the G-05 would get pricey. I also change the antifreeze in my vehicles and equipment every 4 or 5 years. But it is much more expensive to run in everything, so I run the long life stuff. I keep some G-05 to top off later model vehicles that already have it. I am currently running Prestone 50-50.Ĭhange over to the Zerex G-05, I've been running it 50/50 w/distilled water and 10 oz REDLINE water wetter for the last 15+ yrs in the toys/DD's, you'll see the benefits over the Prestone I'm going to change my coolant next week and wondering whats better to run.
